About

My name is Anne-Marie,
I am 29 years old and live in Worcester, England.

I consider myself a European citizen.
I grew up in Bielefeld, Germany. After I graduated from high school I studied in Finland for a couple of months and then went to university in the Netherlands. As part of my studies I completed an internship in the UK (first London, then Milton Keynes) and really enjoyed living and working here. After I graduated I wasn’t set on a specific country. I found a great opportunity in the UK so I moved back to the island and have been living here since. I truly appreciate the freedom I have :)

I am no Jamie Oliver by far but I enjoy cooking a lot.
My parents and I used to have a home cooked meal together every night. Over dinner we would talk about the day at work (or school, in my case), laugh, fight and … well, live. My mum is a fantastic cook and I try to learn and copy as much as possible – I still call for advice or recipes on a regular basis!

My favourite cuisines are Greek, Turkish, Indian and Chinese.

10 random things about me

#1 I was born in a country that does not exist any more.

#2 I have a strange obsession with Excel. When in doubt, create a spread sheet!ginger_and_olives_food_blog_anne-marie

#3 Harry Potter is and will always be my favourite book series. I read the first book when I was 11 years old and it was one of the things that inspired me to learn English (the original versions usually came out a few months before the foreign-language versions did).

#4 My husband and I met in high school.

#5 When friends and family from Germany come over to visit they always have to bring chocolate, vegetarian yoghurt gums and bread.

#6 I can read and write Cyrillic but I don’t speak any of the Slavic languages.

#7 My favourite country in Europe is Slovenia. It is such a small country but has so much to offer. My parents and I used to go there when I was a child and my husband and I spent parts of our honeymoon in Slovenia too.

#8 When I get bored I draw sheep.

#9 Antipasti is my favourite snack food.

#10 I am terribly afraid of heights and flying. Even though I fly several times per year I have to have a couple of drinks before going anywhere near a plane.

That’s it!

I hope you like my blog and enjoy my recipes :)

Love,
Anne-Marie

Liebe Grüße von der Deutschen Wahlwienerin.

  2. Hi Anne-Marie, thanks for visiting my blog. I don’t like German bread, but otherwise I really like your story ;-)

    • How dare you – German bread must be loved! ;)
Thanks for your comment – I really enjoy your blog!

      • Thanks for following!
I guess it’s important what you grew up with. Have you ever tried bread from Tuscany (Toscana)? It is baked without salt and I don’t like it at all.

        • Never tried it but I can imagine I wouldn’t like it all – I am quite fond of salt ;)
Just read that you are from the Netherlands! Ik heb en paar jaren in Arnhem gewoond – aww ik miss Nederland van tijd tot tijd.

  3. Wow, I found a fellow German living in the UK! I had lunch in Worcester today with a friend who was staying with her family in… Kidderminster. Totally with you on the German bread front ;-)

    • Hehe, my Oma and Opa gave me a bread-maker for Christmas so you’re welcome to come over for fresh bread as soon as I figured out how to use it ;)

  4. Yes, it’s been exactly 17 years today! I planned to travel, work and improve my English for six months. I met David that May…. in the end I moved here and studied photography in the UK.
How about you? What brought you here?

    • I studied in the Netherlands and just didn’t feel like going back to Germany just yet.
After we graduated my boyfriend and I applied for jobs in both, Germany and the UK and ended up here in Kiddie :) Who knows, maybe we’ll go back at some point but for now we’re happy where we are.
What about you? 17 years is a long time to go without proper Laugenbrezeln! ;)
